A combat racing game that slightly falls below greatness.

Speed Racer for the Wii is not actually a bad game. It is close to being brilliant, but it has a few small flaws that keep it from getting there. You start the game by picking your character from the menu. Each character has different attributes, so you can choose the player that suits your style of driving.

The characters within the game are rather cartoony and two-dimensional (visually), but the racing and gameplay is 3D, brilliantly lit, full of atmosphere, fast, and almost slick. It is “almost” slick because the Wii is not built for smooth and slick graphics.

A Good Game That Could Have Been Better

There is a great feeling of speed when you play the game, and that is due in most part to the environments you are placed in. There are markings on the floors, lights, and tunnels that make it appear as if your car is going very fast, whilst at the same time keeping your car at a slow enough pace for you to be able to steer and play without needing the reflexes of a Borg or Jedi.

Compare It To Other Games

It is not a bad game at all. It could be compared to Mario Kart because it is a combat racer, but such a comparison is unfair. The great feeling of speed keeps things fresh and interesting, and the music and sound effects are passable too.

There is no classic controller port, which means you have to use the wheel or Wii controller to play. The stunts and such are fun and different without dominating the game, and you will hear the characters talk as you interact with them on the track.

The Slow Motion Features And Luck

The worst part about the game is the slow motion feature. When a crash occurs or a move is performed, then the game is slowed down so that you can see it. The slow motion looks great on previews, but in the game, it simply slows down the pace and is annoying.

The game also relies heavily on luck and not skill. The only way to use your skill is to pull out ahead early in the game and stay there; otherwise, the battle mechanic makes the game unfair and forces you to rely on luck to win.

Pros

  • The feeling of speed is well executed
  • The cars are well designed
  • The race tracks are fantastic
  • Not too difficult and not too easy

Cons

  • Few controller options
  • The slow motion feature is annoying
